The Fundamentals of Every Roulette Game
Mankind has a passion for gambling since its hunter-gatherer days. The seeming random events in life where reason has no room led us to rely on chance, to the point that it has become a mundane part of our existence. As society evolved in complexity, gambling progressed into religious rituals, and soon enough, into a source of amusement.
Gambling treated as a form of entertainment gradually gave way to the establishment of gambling houses, which are now commonly called casinos. These casinos offer a variety of games of chance, but only a few stand out. Among these is roulette, a very popular casino game that is almost synonymous with gambling itself.
A Quick Look at Roulette's History
Roulette started as an 18th century game based on a wheel-type invention of no other than Dr. Blaise Pascal. With its easily understandable set up, roulette's popularity quickly grew in European casinos. It didn't end up as a fad that quietly disappeared from gambling dens however. The early days of global trade brought the game to America - where it also ended up loved by many gamblers - and eventually to the rest of the world.
The Roulette Table
The core components of a roulette table include its signature wheel and a betting board. These two are virtually inseparable, and the game is not complete without one or the other.
Near the center of the wheel are 36 red and black slots labeled 1 to 36 and one or two green slots reserved for the zero(s). In European roulette, there is only one single zero slot and the numbers are arranged in random while in American roulette, the wheel has single and double zero slots and the numbers are arranged in pairs opposite of each other.
Now the board where players place their stakes is composed of labeled spaces for inner and outer bets. The former are placed on the spaces representing the numbers in the wheel. These spaces are usually surrounded on three sides by those where the aptly named outside bets - odd, even, red, black, 1-18, 19-36, dozens and columns - are placed.
How is Roulette Played?
Playing roulette is fairly uncomplicated. Players first have to purchase uniquely colored chips from the dealer. These chips may or may not have monetary values, and are used as bets in place of real cash.
Players may bet as much as the casino allows and can change their stakes as much as they want. However, once the dealer announces, "No more bets", the wagering is immediately stopped, after which the wheel is spun and the ball is rolled. The players will then only have to hope that the ball lands on the slot they've bet on.
While American roulette is more straightforward, European roulette has a few extra rules which are incurred whenever the ball lands on zero. The La Partage rule gives the player a chance to recover half his bet or invoke the En Prison rule, where the entire bet will remain on the board for the next round.
Roulette definitely is a simple game. It may look a tad dull for non-gamblers, but once you've joined in and placed your bets, you'll surely feel the thrill that brought many to the game.
